La urgencia de agua dulce ha obligado a los estados de la costa noroeste de México a arrancar proyectos de construcción de plantas desaladoras para abastecer tanto a las zonas habitacionales como a los complejos turísticos de reciente creación.

Tan sólo el gobierno de Baja California anunció la inversión de $351 millones de pesos en la segunda planta desaladora más grande del país, a fin de abastecer a los habitantes de Ensenada y atraer inversiones turísticas a la región.

De igual forma, la Iniciativa Privada trabaja en otros proyectos de plantas de desalación, tanto en Los Cabos, en Baja California Sur, y Puerto Peñasco, Sonora.

Una de estas empresas es Memco, firma de origen regiomontano que invertirá al menos $1.5 millones de dólares en la construcción de tres plantas para el Trump Ocean Resort Baja México, en Tijuana.

José Luis Benavente, gerente de Ventas de Memco, informó que el proyecto en el complejo Trump consiste en la construcción de los pozos de toma de agua de mar y de los pozos de absorción del agua de rechazo, así como la planta  desaladora de agua de mar con capacidad para 525 m3 diarios en las primeras dos etapas del proyecto.

Esto, además de una planta de tratamiento de aguas residuales sanitarias con capacidad de 420 m3 diarios.

Memco también acaba de construir y poner en marcha la planta desaladora del Paraíso del Mar, en La Paz (Baja California Sur), para abastecer una zona residencial y otra más de condominios.

"La de abasto residencial tiene capacidad para quitar la sal de 432 m3 diarios, mientras que la segunda para los condominios tendrá una capacidad de 650 m3 por día", expresó el directivo.

La primera desaladora ya está operando en Paraíso del Mar, mientras que la segunda iniciará operaciones una vez terminadas las torres de condominios.

De igual forma, Memco terminó este año la construcción de la desaladora del hotel Villa del Palmar, en Los Cabos. Esta es una de las más grandes en esta zona, ya que su capacidad alcanza los 1,000 m3 por día, y empezó a operar a finales del año.

A su vez, el gobierno de Eduardo Bours Castello, de Sonora, anunció que en breve iniciará la planta desaladora con la cual se atenderá la demanda de Puerto Peñasco, que como nuevo destino turístico está atrayendo inversionistas tanto nacionales como internacionales.

Esta desaladora fue anunciada como parte de los planes que buscan hacer de Puerto Peñasco un "Destino Modelo", el nuevo programa de impulso a esta costa de Sonora.

Por su lado, José Guadalupe Osuna Millán, gobernador de Baja California, informó que la desaladora de Ensenada podrá convertir en agua dulce hasta 250 litros por segundo.

El proyecto de la desaladora, que se construiría en el Ejido Nacionalista Sánchez Taboada, estará a 40 minutos de donde se desarrollará Punta Colonet, en Baja California.

El jefe del ejecutivo explicó que en el mes de noviembre se adjudicará el contrato a la empresa que gane la licitación, para que en diciembre inicie trabajos y pueda entrar en operación en un plazo de 18 meses.

El contrato, dijo, incluye el diseño, elaboración del proyecto ejecutivo, potabilización, operación, conducción del agua, conservación y mantenimiento.
